Urban local government elections will be held by the end of this year,
said Urban Development Minister K.N. Nehru .
Local elections were announced in October 2016 and were later canceled.
It was therefore announced that the local bodies would be
managed by separate officers until the election.
Their tenure is then extended to once every six months.
Currently, the tenure of individual officers
has been extended till December 31.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has ordered that
local government elections be held in Villupuram, Kallakurichi,
Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Vellore, Ranipettai, Tirupattur,
Nellai and Tenkasi by September 15.
In this context, Urban Development Minister KN Nehru said that the
local government elections will be held by the end of this year.
The Chief Minister has directed our department to
hold local elections by the end of this year.
Therefore, work is underway to hold urban local elections.
Minister Nehru said that rural local elections for the
9 missing districts would be held by September 15 this year.
